Romance Scams
If you are looking to meet that special someone online via a dating app or social network, you’ll want to proceed with huge caution, especially if the conversation turns to money! While millions of people successfully find a good match, that’s not the case for everyone. Romance scams are on the rise, stealing millions of dollars from unsuspecting victims each year. The scams are emotionally devastating, leaving victims feeling betrayed and financially drained.
Red Flags
Moving too fast… Romance scammers often shower their victims with affection quickly, declaring their love and commitment very early.
Asking for money... Scammers may create a financial hardship story to trick you into sending them money.
Pressuring you… The relationship is a secret and excuses are made for not meeting in person or video chat.
Having inconsistent stories... Their stories may not add up or they may contradict themselves.
Asking for personal information... Scammers could ask for your social security number, bank account information, or other sensitive information.
Protect Yourself
- Take your time. Don't rush into a relationship with someone you've only met online.
- Be careful of the information you share online. Don't post personal information on social media or in chat rooms.
- Never send money to someone you've only met online.
Fallen Victim?
- Stop communicating with the scammer immediately.
- Report the scam to the FTC and your local police department.
- Contact your financial institution to report any fraudulent activity.
It's better to be safe than sorry. By being cautious and taking steps to protect yourself, you can avoid becoming a victim to a scam that drains your savings or leads to identity theft.
