Caller ID Spoofing

Caller ID Spoofing happens when callers use technology to hide their phone numbers so that in the Caller ID another phone number is shown. This spoofing can come in the form of a call or text message and can look like it is from a legitimate bank or other organization.

Caller ID Spoofing is Dangerous
Scammers are deceiving innocent people every day into providing confidential information, like credit card numbers, social security numbers and PINs. With this information, they can gain access to your identity or bank accounts. They can then withdraw money or apply for loans.

How to Protect Yourself
If you receive suspicious communication, don’t respond. Contact the bank directly or check your accounts via Online or Mobile Banking. If you are ever suspicious of a call, we welcome and encourage you to end the call and contact one of our branches directly.

When you call Morton Community Bank, we may use the following to verify your identity:

  • The last four digits of your SSN (never the entire number).
  • Your sixteen-digit card number.
  • CVV code.
  • Exp date.
  • Your physical address.
  • Your birthday.

Morton Community Bank will never call you and ask for:

  • Your online banking.
  • Your debit card number.
  • Your PIN.

If you accidentally provide a scammer with information or click on a link, call the bank immediately at 1 (888) 418-5585. You should also report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You can do this online at ftc.gov/complaint or by calling 1 (877) FTC-HELP.

 Remember

  • Don't answer calls from numbers you don't recognize.
  • You should never explicitly trust the Caller-ID that is displayed on your phone when someone contacts you.
  • If you do answer a call from an unknown number, don't give out any personal information.
  • Be careful what text messages you click on.
  • Review your bank statements and Online and Mobile Banking regularly.
  • Use a security app to block spam.
  • Be aware of the latest scams at ftc.gov
